Isis to pilot contactless m-payments in Salt Lake City
Isis, the mobile commerce joint venture AT&T, T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless, Discover Financial Services and Barclays Bank, said it will pilot the Isis m-commerce platform in Salt Lake City in early- to mid-2012. The deployment will mark the first commercially available mobile transportation fare payment program in the United States, according to Isis.
To enable the pilot, Isis entered into an agreement with the Utah Transit Authority to upgrade the entire UTA transit system to accept contactless, near field communication technology-based smart phone payments. Additionally, Isis reportedly is investing in the infrastructure to enable mobile commerce nationwide and be available to merchants, banks, payment networks and mobile telecommunication carriers.
"The Isis system will evolve to offer customers a highly secure and convenient way to pay, redeem coupons and store merchant loyalty cards, all with the tap of their phone," Isis said in a statement.
